Twin town activities were launched in Finland during the Second World War. Finland was involved in the war and had deep financial difficulties. Many Finnish municipalities got a twin town from Sweden, which was ready to give some economic help to suffering inhabitants. Orsa in Dalarna was chosen a twin town for Liperi. Inhabitants in Orsa collected money to send to war orphans. This way the activities between friendship municipalities got started.
Relations between friendship municipalities have been established in order to maintain and strengthen international contacts. The purpose is to promote and support cooperation with schools, organisations and political parties in different countries.
Liperi has five friendship municipalities. The oldest is, as told above, Orsa in Sweden. There has been cooperation also with the municipality of Vepsä in the Republic of Karelia in Russia, Saku - Estonia, Büchen - Germany and Rendalen - Norway for many years.
